Based on the degree of economic dependency on livestock, a pastoral production system has been defined as one in which 50 percent or more of household gross revenue (the total value of marketed production plus the estimated value of subsistence production) comes from livestock or livestock-related activities, or where more than 20 percent of household food energy is directly derived from livestock or livestock-related activities.
