Definition

  • Information Biosolids refers to the solid organic matter recovered from a sewage treatment process and used especially as fertilizer. Biosolids include excreta, faecal matter, and septage that has been treated and tested and is appropriate for use as fertilizer and/or soil amendment.

Scope note

  • The term biosolids does not include untreated wastewater sludges, industrial sludges or the product produced from the high temperature incineration of sewage sludge. Many other solid waste materials are not classified as biosolids e.g., animal manures; food processing or abattoir wastes; solid inorganic wastes; and untreated sewage or untreated wastes from septic systems/sullage wastes.
