Scope note
- The definition of smallholders differs between countries and between agro-ecological zones. In favourable areas of sub-Saharan Africa with high population densities, they often cultivate less then 1 ha of land, whereas they may cultivate 10 ha or more in semi-arid areas, or manage 10 head of livestock. The terms “smallholder” and “small scale farmers” are sometimes used interchangeably. However, there is a difference between the two, as "smallholder" refers more to tenure, while "small-scale producer" or farmer refers more directly to production levels. (en)
