Combinaison de méthodes de gestion et d’utilisation des terres qui préviennent la diminution ou la détérioration des sols par des causes naturelles ou humaines. Elle vise le plus souvent à gérer les sols de manière à prévenir leur érosion par l’eau de pluie et de ruissellement, ainsi que par le vent. Elle tente également de protéger les sols contre les dommages occasionnés par la machinerie agricole (p. ex. le compactage) et les changements nocifs à leur composition chimique (p. ex. l’acidification et la salinisation).

Soil conservation is a combination of all methods of management and land use that safeguard the soil against depletion or deterioration by natural or human-induced factors. It most often attempts to ensure that soil does not erode and wash into streams and lakes or blow away in the wind, but it also involves the protection of the soil from damage by machinery (e.g., compaction) or by harmful changes to its chemistry (e.g., acidification or salinization).
