As alterações climáticas são mudanças do clima que ocorrem a nível global. Segundo o “Painel Intergovernamental sobre Mudanças Climáticas” (IPCC, 2001) as alterações climáticas resultam de uma variação estatisticamente significativa (no mínimo mais de 30 anos) no estado médio do clima ou na sua variabilidade, sem identificação absoluta das causas dessa mudança.

Climate change refers to the long-term changes in the Earth’s climate that are warming the atmosphere, ocean and land. Climate change is affecting the balance of ecosystems that support life and biodiversity, and impacting health. It also causes more extreme weather events, such as more intense and/or frequent hurricanes, floods, heat waves, and droughts, and leads to sea level rise and coastal erosion as a result of ocean warming, melting of glaciers, ad loss of ice sheets.

El cambio climático se refiere a los cambios a largo plazo en el clima de la Tierra, que provocan el calentamiento de la atmósfera, el océano y el suelo. El cambio climático afecta el equilibrio de los ecosistemas que sustentan la vida y la biodiversidad, e impacta también en la salud. Asimismo provoca fenómenos meteorológicos más extremos, como huracanes, inundaciones, olas de calor y sequías más intensas y/o más frecuentes, y conduce al aumento del nivel del mar y la erosión costera como consecuencia del calentamiento del océano, el derretimiento de los glaciares y la pérdida de casquetes de hielo.

Le changement climatique désigne les transformations à long terme du climat de la Terre qui réchauffent l'atmosphère, les océans et les terres. Le changement climatique affecte l'équilibre des écosystèmes qui soutiennent la vie et la biodiversité, et a un impact sur la santé. Il provoque également des phénomènes météorologiques plus extrêmes, tels que des ouragans, des inondations, des vagues de chaleur et des sécheresses plus intenses et/ou plus fréquentes, et entraîne une élévation du niveau de la mer et une érosion côtière en raison du réchauffement des océans, de la fonte des glaciers et de la disparition des nappes glaciaires.

- Note that the Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), in its Article 1, defines climate change as: ‘a change of climate which is attributed directly or indirectly to human activity that alters the composition of the global atmosphere and which is in addition to natural climate variability observed over comparable time periods.’ The UNFCCC thus makes a distinction between climate change attributable to human activities altering the atmospheric composition and climate variability attributable to natural causes.
