DEFINITION

White spot syndrome virus (WSSV) was assigned by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) as the only member of the genus Whispovirus within the Nimaviridae family. WSSV has an extremely wide host range. The virus can infect a wide range of aquatic crustaceans including marine, brackish and freshwater penaeids, crabs and crayfish.
