The larval stage of Eels and Tuna. Leptocephali are flat and transparent larvae which feed on marine snow but are not really motile, they drift in marine currents. Leptocephali develop larger sizes and undergo a longer larval period than other fish larvae.

Scope note
- In the past, Leptocephalus was used for species of larval eels, called leptocephali, that were thought to be new fish species, or whose adult eel species were not known. However, leptocephalus describes a developmental stage common to many species in the order Anguilliformes (eels) and some other groups, such as bonefish and tarpon, and is not as a taxonomic classification.
