The death of all or a part of a plant or animal or fish population due to exposure to cold temperatures or inclement weather conditions during winter. For example, a plant killed by exposure to winter conditions, or the loss of animals in a lake, pond or other water body as a result of heavy ice cover, which restricts photosynthesis and leads to an oxygen depletion.
