baselines

In the context of the Law of the Sea and maritime delimitation, line from which the breadth of the maritime zones under national jurisdiction is measured. From this line are measured the outer limits of a State's territorial sea, contiguous zone, the exclusive economic zone and the continental shelf. Hence the term "territorial sea baseline (TSB)", used in some legal and technical literature. The baseline is also the limiting line for internal waters.

La ligne de base est la ligne séparant les eaux intérieures d'un État et sa mer territoriale. Elle correspond habituellement à la laisse de basse mer, telle qu'elle est indiquée sur les cartes marines officielles de l'État côtier, et suit donc la ligne du zéro hydrographique. La ligne de base est aussi le support de la mesure des autres formes de juridiction portant sur les espaces maritimes, particulièrement celles instituées par la Convention de Montego Bay, telles que les zones économiques exclusives ou les extensions au plateau continental.
