DEFINITION

The land-ocean aquatic continuum encapsulates the transition zone between terrestrial ecosystems and the open ocean and has been used in this way to describe a series of biogeochemically and physically active systems that process carbon and nutrients as these elements move from upland soils to the open ocean.
