DEFINITION
-
A sudden, large-scale mortality of organisms caused by factors such as oxygen deficit, disease, pollution, etc. Mass mortalities can generally be considered as exaggerated forms of natural mortality, usually distinguished by being of rapid onset, affecting a large proportion of the population over an extensive geographic area, and being of relatively short duration.
