DEFINITION

  • Non-target species are organisms that are not intended to be affected or influenced by a particular action, intervention, or substance. For example, in fisheries non-target species are those for which the fishing gear is not specifically deployed or set, but may have immediate commercial value and be a desirable component of the catch; includes bycatch and by-product.
