  • The air surrounding the earth, as a series of layers of different characteristics. Composed mainly of nitrogen and oxygen with traces of carbon, which acts as a buffer between the sun and the earth. The layers, extending away from the earth are in order: troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere and exosphere
