DEFINITION

  • Relatively narrow and sharply defined transition zone between two or more communities. Edge communities or assemblages (those associated with ecotones) are commonly species rich with elements of both communities present (although in extreme ecotones (land to sea, freshwater to salt water) the reverse may be true).
