تعريف
-
Mire: a peatland in a state of active peat formation and accumulation. General term which embraces all those peat-forming ecosystems described in English by such other terms as bog, fen, carr, muskeg, moor, and peatland. Does not include marshes since they are, by definition nonpeat-forming and are seasonally flooded. (en)

تبصرة توضيحية
- The classification of mires is confusing not only because of major regional differences but also different criteria have been used which vary in space and time and therefore represent continua of change rather than discrete differences. Note: Mire waters are located mostly below the soil surface level as are most of its plants. Also, bogs receive water mainly from precipitation, while fens are supplied with water mostly from surface and groundwater sources. Marshes and swamps are non-peat forming. Marsh vegetation is dominated by grasses, swamp vegetation by trees. (en)
