Tolerance of organisms for exposure to different stresses (Adapted from van der Meeren, T., Mangor-Jensen, A. Tolerance of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua L.) larvae to acute ammonia exposure. Aquacult Int 28, 1753–1769 (2020). https://doi.org/10.1007/s10499-020-00555-8 )
Natural water bodies which have an intrinsic regime of extreme fluctuation in water level, with periods of complete or almost complete drying out as part of the natural cycle. They have no inflow or outflow streams at the surface, except at times of very high water level, when temporary out-flows may develop. Instead, they are directly connected to the underlying groundwater system and periodically empty and are recharged via swallow holes or smaller openings in their bed. Note
Aquifer-fed water bodies may include springs, ponds, wetlands, or small lakes that are sustained by groundwater discharge.

The Dry Corridor is a strip of territory that stretches across Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala. It is an area highly vulnerable to extreme climatic events, where long periods of drought are followed by intense rains that strongly affect the livelihoods and food security of local populations. (FAO, 2024. Dry Corridor. https://www.fao.org/americas/regional-initiatives/central-american-dry-corridor/en)
Note
The term Dry Corridor, although referred to a climatic phenomenon, has an ecological basis and defines a group of ecosystems in the eco-region of dry tropical forests in Central America covering the lowlands of the Pacific coastal area, and most of central pre-mountain region of El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Guanacaste in Costa Rica and Panama’s Arco Seco area.
A tunnellike passage through which air is blown at a known velocity to determine the effects of wind pressure on an object (as an aircraft and their parts or model or a guided missile) placed in the passage. (FAOTERM)
Food economics is an applied field that is concerned with applying economic principles in optimizing the production and distribution of food. (Food Economics. Matthew N.O. Sadiku, Tolulope J.
