The pinewood nematode (PWN), Bursaphelenchus xylophilus (Steiner & Buhrer, 1934) Nickle, 1970, an A2 quarantine organism according to the European Plant Protection Organisation (EPPO) is the causal agent of pine wilt disease (PWD) and is a major pathogen of conifers, which has negative impacts on forest health, natural ecosystem stability and on international wood trade.
