Leptosols comprise very thin soils over continuous rock and soils that are extremely rich in coarse fragments. Leptosols are particularly common in mountainous regions. Leptosols include Lithosols of the Soil Map of the World (FAO–UNESCO, 1971–1981), Lithic subgroups of the Entisol Order (United States of America), Leptic Rudosols or Tenosols (Australia), and Petrozems and Litozems (Russia). In many national systems and in the Soil Map of the World, Leptosols on calcareous rocks belong to Rendzinas and those on other rocks to Rankers. Continuous rock at the surface is considered nonsoil in many soil classification systems.
