Nitrogen use efficiency is defined as the ratio of the crop nitrogen uptake, to the total input of nitrogen fertilizer. It can also be defined more broadly as the ratio, of crop nitrogen uptake, to available soil N which would include applied fertilizer N plus residual mineral N in the soil. The greater the ratio the better the nitrogen use efficiency.
