Pres, ekspeller veya özütleme gibi elde edilme yöntemlerine bağlı olarak besin maddesi kompozisyonu ve yem değeri oldukça değişen, uygulanan sıcaklığa bağlı olarak çiğ soyada bulunan tripsin baskılayıcı, üreaz ve soyin gibi beslenme engelleyen faktörleri içerebilen, %42-%46 civarında yüksek oranda ham protein içeren, proteinin biyolojik değeri bitkisel protein kaynakları arasında en değerli olan, lizin amino asidi bakımından zengin olmakla birlikte metionin amino asidi bakımından fakir olan, ham selüloz içeriği düşük olduğundan besin maddelerinin sindirilebilirliği yüksek, başta kanatlı ve domuz olmak üzere bütün çiftlik hayvanlarının beslenmesi için çok değerli yağ sanayi kalıntısı.

Soybean meal is the by-product of the extraction of soybean oil. Several processes exist, resulting in different products. Soybean meal is usually classified for marketing by its crude protein content. There are two main categories of soybean meal, the “high-protein” soybean meal with 47-49% protein and 3% crude fiber, obtained from dehulled seeds, and the “conventional" soybean meal, with 43-44% protein, that contain the hulls.
