A large piece of floating ice protruding about 5 m above sea-level, which has broken away from an Arctic ice shelf, having a thickness of 30-50 m and an area of from a few thousand square metres to 500 square kilometres or more, and usually characterized by a regularly undulating surface which gives it a ribbed appearance from the air.

Très grand fragment de glace flottante qui émerge d'environ 5 m au-dessus du niveau de la mer, provenant d'un plateau de glace arctique. L'épaisseur totale est de 30 à 50 m, et la surface de quelques milliers de mètres carrés à 500 km2 ou plus. La surface est ordinairement caractérisée par une ondulation régulière qui lui donne, vue d'avion, une apparence côtelée.

Толщина Л.о. 15—50 м, над поверхность моря его край возвышается на 2—7 м. Поперечник Л. о. достигает 15—35 км, площадь — от нескольких тысяч м² до 500 км².
