Principe adopté par la conférence des NU sur l'environnement et le développement (1992), en base auquel une approche précautionnelle devrait être largement appliquée en vue de protéger l'environnement, et notamment, en cas de risque de dommages graves ou irréversibles, l’absence de certitude scientifique absolue ne doit pas être un prétexte pour remettre à plus tard des mesures effectives visant à prévenir ces dommages.

Principio adoptado por la Conferencia de las Naciones Unidas sobre Medio Ambiente y Desarrollo (1992) que, con la finalidad de proteger el medio ambiente, sugiere que se aplique ampliamente un enfoque precaucional; ello significa que allí donde existan riesgos de un daño grave o irreversible al medio ambiente, la falta de una absoluta certeza científica al respecto no debería ser utilizada como pretexto para posponer el establecimiento de medidas, eficaces en función del costo, destinadas a prevenir la degradación del medio ambiente.

Principle adopted by the UN Conference on Environment and Development (1992) that in order to protect the environment, a precautionary approach should be widely applied, meaning that where there are threats of serious or irreversible damage to the environment, lack of full scientific certainty should not be used as a reason for postponing cost-effective measures to prevent environmental degradation.
