The generic use of the term “convention” is synonymous with the generic use of the term “treaty” – it can cover all legally binding international agreements. It may also refer to a group of laws apart from international customary rules and general principles of international law.

- As a specific term, convention is now mainly used for formal multilateral treaties with a broad number of parties, such as the 1992 Convention on Biological Diversity.
