DEFINITION

  • Net Protein Utilization (NPU) determines the ratio of amino acid converted to proteins in the body (or retained in the body) to the ratio of amino acids supplied in the diet. NPU measures percent of dietary protein retained in the body.

SCOPE NOTE

  • Net protein utilization and biological value both measure the same parameter of nitrogen retention, however, the difference lies in that the biological value is calculated from nitrogen absorbed whereas net protein utilization is from nitrogen ingested. (en)
