  • Bitkilerin çiçek ve meyve kısımlarında, balıkların kromotoforlarında, etinde, karaciğerinde, gonadlarında ve yumurtalarında bulunan ve onlara sarı, turuncu, kahverengi veya kırmızı renklerini veren, çoğunlukla fotosentez tepkimelerinde de görev alan, yağda çözünen, karotenler ve ksantofiller olmak üzere iki grubu bulunan karbonlu bir bileşik.
