A candidate gene is defined as a gene that is identified either by its protein product that suggests that it could be the determinant of the disease in question (a biological candidate), or by its position in a chromosomal region that has been linked with the disease (positional candidate).

El término “gen candidato” se refiere a un gen que, según se cree, puede estar relacionado con un rasgo determinado, como una enfermedad o un atributo físico. Con base en su ubicación genómica o su función conocida, se sospecha que el gen puede tener un rol en ese rasgo, y por eso se vuelve candidato para profundizar su estudio.
