Active packaging usually means having active functions beyond the inert passive containment and protection of the product, with the addition of various components to the packaging material. These components (oxygen and ethylene scavengers, moisture regulators, controlled release of antioxidants and antimicrobial agents, among others) either absorb or release substances in response to changes in the ambient environment both inside and outside the package thereby maintaining the quality and safety of food products
