True fruit flies (Tephritidae) belong to a highly diverse family of Diptera inhabiting nearly all tropical, subtropical, and temperate regions worldwide. The Tephritidae are one of two fly families referred to as fruit flies, the other family being the Drosophilidae. Tephritidae are true fruit flies, Drosophilidae are pomace flies or vinegar flies.
